A day of life in an informal settlement

Hi My name is Thato. Just a normal day well in my house. I woke up and walked to school. Okay, I’m at school and my best friend Thabo is here. At school I was famished, because I didn’t have food at my house/shack. Time for class, I share a seat with Thabo our teacher Miss  L/ Miss Levete let us pick who we sit with. We share chairs because we are 60 plus Miss L in my class! I’m sharing a textbook with Thabo, Matthew, Sibusiso, Lerato and Lisa. I wish we had more textbooks so we wouldn’t have to be in groups. That would be the greatest. School ended now and I walk home. I wish we had a car or a TV, it would be marvelous! I got home and now I do my homework. Time to go to Thabo’s house. Today Thabo and I decided to look for goods people dropped or lost. Ouch! I tripped on the road! At that moment I thought I wish we had a fitting road like the city people. Yay mummy’s back! She always tries to come back from work with an appetizing treat. I also wish I had a phone like those...

The Singing Inspector

It was a sunny day I was sitting in my room writing in my diary until the singing inspector, Mr Raymond came. He was wearing huge knickerbockers and some thick stockings like a man who hunts. He is the perfect man to hate. He would call everyone to come in the big room. The little ones wouldn’t come and the older teenagers like Jack Long and Paulus. They only did exams and no singing. Then we would do the doh ray me fah and things like tata tete. After that, singing. This time he called Benny and Charles first to stand in front. After that he said you two, the long and short, sing for us. Benny and Charles didn’t know any song sadly. Mr R got angry and with a roaring voice he said what can you sing? In a weak voice Charles said we can sing Pretty Polly? Mr R shouted then sing it!
